She has been called encouraging, inspiring, and a positive role model for women.
Besides a successful business woman, Ardapple volunteers with numerous charitable agencies and her past community service has included, board member & president of the Heart of Illinois Restaurant Association, Peoria Civic Center Authority Advisory Commissioner, and she served on the Board of Directors for the Heartland Partnership and Economic Development Council.
She currently serves as Friends of Wildlife Prairie State Park, board member of the District 150 School Foundation and President of the Central Illinois Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners.
The award was established by the ATHENA Foundation. The National NAWBO Convention here inChicago has opened my eyes even wider recognizing the challenges and celebrating the successes of other women as they lead their business forward. Each of us a business owners have dreams and the network NAWBO represents offers a foundation to lean upon as a pillar of support. Personally, I am attending as this year's president of the Central Illinois NAWBO Chapter, representing 75+ fine diverse businesses spread through out our region. Learning best practices on membership retention, public policy, and developing corporate partnership is just the short list of topics already discussed. I am looking forward to the program today gathering more tools to bring back to the chapter. So much is written about time management and efficiencies for small business to follow during these challenging economic times. I must comment that the staff of Apple's Bakery just doesn't seem to ever slow down. With May half over, it is absolutely amazing the Holidays will be upon us shortly! Two points of interest have developed. Our operational hours on Saturdays have been adjusted to fit the season. We are now open 6AM - 2PM on Saturdays. This gives our staff the opportunity to enjoy more outdoor activities as well. For those corporate clients out there, remember a 20% discount on our logo tin program is in effect until June 30, 2009. This is a perfect time to organize holiday gift giving off your desk now. Hope you all are well and thank you for your business. Yikes it is for dinner at a restaurant you have not eaten at before. Do you tell your date that you have allergies or intolerance's before the date? What if you get there and the staff is clueless as to what you can eat? You don't want to appear to be some sort of high maintaince nightmare...LOL

Well having done this I have some simple ways to make it easier for all parties involved. Ask your date the name of the restaurant and what they enjoy about it. This gives you the name and some of what they serve in advance! Then I look them up on line. Read the menu thoroughly. Call the Chef and let them know I AM ON A DATE and do not want this made into an ordeal...
This saves a great deal of stress on me as I know 2-3 things I can eat so I can focus on the date! The Chef knows that I am there and is aware. My date does NOT have to feel awkward for picking a restaurant.
So next I was asked when do you tell your date you have food sensitivities or intolerance's? Hummm....Good question. If I have just met them I will wait until the 2nd or 3rd date. This way they can see that I have a good grip on my situation. Which keeps us both at ease. This has certainly been my experience since becoming a Make Mine a Million awardee in 2006. It was then, I first drafted an elevator speech. Purpose and passion for cookies and a love for people were the foundation of my drive. Then I met Nell and the Make Mine team. There I found an effort that believed in me more than I believed in myself. Apple's Bakery entered into the M3 community as a traditional Midwestern retail bakery. Well, that was almost 3 years ago. Now, confidently fueled with the resources of Make Mine a Million coupled with new found goals and dreams, Apple's Bakery embarks on a new journey tomorrow. The show is going on the road! Apple's Bakery will be an exhibitor at the Thrive Allergy Gluten Free Expo in Chicago held at McCormick Place. Now this is HUGE!
I remember back to the M3 competition and conversations about not only can you but are you willing to scale your business in order to grow. To be honest with you, at the time, I do not think I really understood just what that meant. Today, as I write, I am smiling, because now I do and am excited for the opportunity to stretch. Our gluten free division developed as a result of M3 and now it is this division which is ready to launch.
Bottom line is ... we may know what we think our business is, but sometimes it is our business that will tell us what it needs to be. You just never know what opportunity is around the corner. Wish us luck this weekend.

Join me tomorrow on Ms. CEO Show, a national radio show, simulcast on www.msceoshow.com 1PM Central

new blog site: applesbakery.wordpress.com

A Mother's Work / Life Balance Gets Off Center

Everywhere we turn there are abundant articles on work, life, balance. It continues to be one of the hottest topics for us, as women, to explore, examine and attempt to implement. Some of women are able to position their days in the ebb and flow of life's demands with barely raising and eyebrow. Then there are others who live under with the constant barage of everyday stress as if it is a battle field. I like to think my life work equation has been one of fairly consistent balance fueled by positive outlook. Looking back, my imbalance crept on the scene just before Christmas. Our college son was to drive home after finals from Northern Iowa. What a joyous event! Holiday spirits were high with the anticipation of my son's hug as he entered the door. Alex is a fun guy to have around and the entire staff looks forward to his arrival on the baking scene. It is similar to having the calvary arrive when high school and college kids when released for break saunter in as only young people can, to fill in as temporary Holiday help by offerring the seasoned crew some relief and youthful laughter. You know it is just plain fun! Well, as it turned out Alex was to be delayed an extra day due to a blizzard. Oh well, my favorite helper would still be home for Christmas. He and I have spent numerous December Sundays together baking and sharing great conversations. It is somewhat like when your children have yet to get their driver's license and they are captive audience in the car! We laugh, sing and generally goof off calling it work. Well, I digress.... at any rate the Holiday baking season wrapped up...Christmas day was spent enjoying family and friends ... and Alex spent the night with friends. You may be wondering how this is going to relate to work / life balance. Well the next morning, Central Illinois had a terrible ice storm which most of us were not expecting, especially groggy eyed college boys as they were doing a good deed by taking out the garbage for a freind's mother. Sure enough Alex's feet slid out from under him causing him to crash to the ground resulting in a broken ankle. Needless to say what a lousy way to spend break and yes it would be a better story for him if it had been a skiing mishap! In one fell swoop a self sufficient college young man became completely reliant on others. Fitted in a non weight bearing cast for the next 4-6 weeks, unable to drive...even the simple pleasure of carrying a glass of milk and cookies to the couch in front of the TV required the assistance of another. The first 2 weeks were an adjustment for the entire family. This is an example of how a twist of fate for one family member impacts the entire unit. It has given me pause to reflect on my own life/balance equation while sharing with Alex the the principle there is good that rises from everything when approached with a positive attitude even in the darkest moments. As a mother, it has been difficult to return him to school on crutches in the middle of winter. I admit to having been consumed with my love and concern to best guide Alex through his newly found emotions. Coaching him that there is nothing wrong in asking for help and that someday he will have the opportunity to help another. Now that Alex is back at school, and yes my mother's concern is still intack, I appraoch my day with warmth in understanding and great appreciation for the tools which are available by the Make Mine program. These tools have been an assistance not just in my business but now in my home. And you know....the work side of my equation just went humming right along.... the staff confident in their abilities continued to guide the business forward making it easier for me to be a mom! I encourage every woman business owner right now to visit: http://www.makemineamillion.org and join our community today! Being a part of the Make Mine community just makes life even better!

Enterprising Women of the Year Award

Peoria, IL – Mary Ardapple, owner and CEO of Apple’s Bakery, was recently named one of the 2009 Enterprising Women of the Year by Enterprising Women magazine.
Nominations for the award poured in throughout October and November and the magazine's editorial team narrowed the field to a group of semi-finalists. Ardapple was one of five winners in the category of “Up to $1 Million in Annual Revenues.”
"The caliber of honorees for the Enterprising Women of the Year Award is amazing. These women are all leading fast-growth businesses, while assuming leadership roles in their communities, and mentoring other women in business. We are so proud of each and every one of them," Monica Smiley, Publisher/CEO of Enterprising Women, said.
Winners and finalists will be recognized at a gala dinner held in their honor during the 7th Annual Enterprising Women of the Year Awards Celebration, March 11-13, 2009 at Disney's Yacht Club Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The celebration has been planned to shine a spotlight on the accomplishments of these honorees.
Since 1989, Apple's Bakery has worked to carve out a niche as a gateway to Midwestern hospitality. Ever since the time change our morning runs have taken on a new dimension. You see, we go out at 5AM and “yes” it is very dark. Morgan has a glow collar and I have a headlamp, but to be honest one really doesn’t see where to plant the feet well. The route is flat and paved. We have been on the course so many times even the potholes are familiar. Our goal is not to set a record, but to clear, at least my mind, (I am not ever sure where hers’ is!) of some of the daily noise and clutter. Many of you may be able to relate that the volume of daily stress and noise can really ramp up as we stretch the envelop toward growth or just trying to maintain the daily grind.
Out the door we trundle, with the silence of the awakening world around us. Truthfully, I hadn’t slept well. Inventories, schedules and cash flow had awakened me in the night. The paper again filled with not much encouragement with a very hot strong cup of coffee served as a preamble to getting the head in the game. Morgan has canine neighbors, she is always hopeful one may be in their yards as we pass by. I always tell her at 5 AM they are most likely still chasing rabbits in their sleep! With a knowing look of anticipation, she is still hopeful maybe today a friend with be in the yard. No such luck today as we round the corner to complete a 3 mile loop. I can tell Morgan’s head is really in the game. She has a couple of traits when in the flow. I am not clear how she does it, but she’s able to run slanted on the curbing. Or she gets real focused on the white outer striping of the lane and buckles down for the outing. Today for what ever reason, she must have figured I needed some space. Up on the curbing she stayed allowing me the white line. Down the pavement we trod. The air, though cool, had a calming element to it. I am feeling strong and determined, head down (not a good position to be in if a car is coming at you). Morgan is not demanding a thing from my presence. We are cruising …. not thinking….not looking….not all present….then a tap of awareness enters my consciousness and I look up to view in the middle of the road a deer. (Now deer are not an uncommon animal for me to see as they like to eat the flowers in my yard much of the summer as a breakfast buffet). What made this occurence stand out was it made me raise my head, engage my brain and see. Deer travels in pairs, so I looked to see where the other one was. Sure enough just off the curb it stood calmly observing me. Now Morgan would have enjoyed nothing more than to race over the hill after them. On the contrary without a command she sat next to me and waited what the next move would be. ….very unlike her!
This moment in time was so meaningful and beautiful. Mother Nature’s quintessential example of animal partnership for me to view in the morning’s dawn. This moment in time said to me “stop and feel blessed, even though times may be challenging, the partnerships each of us are granted in life make the journey smoother and more rewarding.” Off the deer bound over the bluff. Morgan and I pick up our stride and headed back home to begin the day. She to a comfortable dog bed and a nap …. me checking off a mental list of the abundance of partnerships which bring my life pleasure and accomplishment. And you know, right at the top of that list is the team at Count Me In and the Make Mine a Million program offerring partnerships which now enrich not only mine, but my family’s life.
What about you? Are you keeping your head up and eyes open as you move through the day?My closing thought for you is, please do, we are all in this together as trusted partners in life. Enjoy.

Does Your Balance Include Fun?

There is always so much chatter in the news about remembering to maintain a work - life balance. The importance of balance should never be minimalized. It is an equation where the decisions we make can be the difference between success and failure not only for ourselves but our businesses. Yet, prioritizing and accomplishing effective balance can easily be shoved to a backburner as a business owner is struggling during this economic downturn.
Recently, I had been feeling a slow slide toward all work and no play. Ever sense becoming involved in the Make Mine a Million program, it seems my mind has been stretched in every direction. I have enjoyed the mental challenges of becoming strategic in business development. The conversations my coach and I have shared have opened layers of my inner self to me with positive outcomes never befored explored. The net benefit even rippled over into becoming a runner last year for the first time. The reward not only physical but mentally expansive. The year sped past with all types of developments and the running just plodded along becoming a comfortable friend.
With the scope of our gluten free wholesale becoming a reality, I have been fixated 24/7 on the launch and production of our first orders. Excercise has remained a part of my balance regimen, but with a lesser degree of intensity as a stress reducer. Little did I realize how consumed I had become until a casual email from a friend came asking my participation in an upcoming fundaraiser. The organization CASA of Peoria County, http://www.casapeoria.org/, was having their annual fundraiser as a spin off of the Television hit “Dancing with the Stars”. Without much forethought, because I was really thinking about what I had to do next with the business, I said “OK.” Then the reality set in….remembering that I don’t dance! My friend assures, “me that’s ok … you’ll be partnered with someone who does and will teach you.” In answer to the questioning look from family and friends that I had agreed to this was …. if I can’t laugh and have fun with myself then things have gotten too serious.
The past 4 weeks now simultaneously included absolutely the biggest business initiative in my career along with dance class. The experience has reinforced the value of fun and laughter! The event is now past, but lessons learned of letting someone lead, posture, preparedness, and trust will carry me forward in many positive ways. In a subsequent post I plan to expand how this experience will be utilized as a reinforcement to my life -work balance methodology.
What about you? Are you remembering the fun factor for your life?

You never know who may be sitting across the table...are you prepared?

You never know who may be sitting across the table that may be the source of a long sought after contact or hold the key to opening the door of opportunity. Reflecting over the past years, there have been numerous occassions when leaving a meeting or conversation, I stop in my tracks thinking, “why didn’t I ask this or that question?” Kicking myself for after the fact thinking with low confidence in asking for a name or introduction that may have advanced my business efforts. Only to play the I should have … why didn’t I… if only I had asked game while driving away. During a recent conversation with an individual interviewing for a post with our local University this was again shown to me. Only this time, well versed in the developmental language of the Make Mine a Million program, I asked and answered straight away. Before delving into the primary conversation, a community peer asked what was “up” at the bakery. For those of you reading that know me, already are nodding your heads with this next commet, but it is difficult for me to give short answers when it is a topic I am passionate about! Soon I had launched into rapid fire commentary about the emergence of our gluten free division and our first shipment to Chicagoland area Treasure Island Foods! Now the interviewee is a leader in entreprenuer academia and expressed interest in what I was saying. As she regaled her accomplishments and current development strategies, I asked if she was knowledgeable of Count Me In and founder, Nell Merlino. Her indication was she had but not yet had the opportunity to meet Nell. Naturally, at which point I encouraged her to do such. Then she suddenly says, “have you ever heard of Lucky Napkin?” I just about fell out of my seat! I say well yes I have and had met Amilya at the New Mexico event. What a small world! As the conversation continues, she is emphasizing the importance of Women Owned Business Certification. Where at that point I reference my business goal of having gluten free products in a relationship with Kroger Companies grocery store chain. Another ligtthening bolt of the unbelieveable happened! She asks if I would like her to extend my business card to the CEO of Kroger when he speaks at an upcoming conference she is leading. Don’t worry I actually gave her 3 cards just in case she came across anyone else that may have an interest in my work.
The bottomline for me is this, the resources provided us in the Make Mine a Million Dollar Buisness program are huge! For those of us in the program this chance conversation reinforced the value of being a part of this group. For those of you just learning about Make Mine a Million , I urge you to sign up and get involved. Together we are going to shape the future of our country!

Good to get out of the business and encourage other.

Speaker shares her life journey
By Ed McMenamin
Published: Thursday, October 23, 2008 3:15 PM CDT

PEKIN - Twenty-five years ago, a terrible fire inspired entrepreneur Mary Ardapple to start Apple's Bakery in Peoria.
“Had I not had my burn accident, and known that life can change tomorrow, I would not be an entrepreneur today,” she said. “So though that particular instance caused me a great deal of pain, it gave me the courage to say, ‘I really must participate in my life.' And so I have made a 25-year career of participating in my life, and consequently in my customers' lives.”
Now, she says she has “A lot of fun, and I eat really well.”
She described her experience as a restaurant and bakery owner Wednesday at the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce Business Recognition Luncheon at the Pekin Country Club. Almost 200 local business people attended the luncheon.
Originally from Colorado, Ardapple said she never intended to stay in Peoria when she came to visit her sister for a summer in 1982.
But, she ended up with a job at O'Leary's restaurant as a prep cook. She already had a degree in business administration, and by the end of the summer she was the kitchen manager.
She said she went back to Colorado, but soon felt “homesick” for Peoria, and returned to become the general manager at O'Leary's in Peoria.
It was when she came back to Peoria, in the winter of 1983, that her “fire accident” changed her perspective.
“(It) put me into St. Francis hospital for about 11 days, 13 days,” she said. “And it badly burned my face and my arms. And when I came out of the hospital I found that O'Leary's restaurant had been put up for sale.”
With her father co-signing the loan, she purchased the restaurant.
“I had absolutely no idea what I was doing,” she said.
She must have had some clue, because eventually Apple's Bakery grew out of the O'Leary's.
She said that restaurant customers enjoyed her cookies and pies so much that in 1988 Apple's Bakery incorporated and moved to a modest space of 790 square feet with two employees.
The company now occupies 6,000 square feet, employs 20 people and is approaching $1 million in sales at its current location at 8412 N. Knoxville Ave., Peoria.

Social Network leads to Viral Marketing

In 2007, Apple's Bakery began to build its' social platform with a presence in this blog format and an upgraded website. The goal was to begin to reach out to a customer base across the country by developing an e-commerce community. Today, as we approach 4th quarter sales, our social platform has expanded to include a presence on Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Plaxo and LinkedIn, plus a newer upgrade of our website http://www.applesbakery.com/ and a blog dedicated to discussions surrounding food intolerance at http://www.smilesmadefromscratch.com/. Being a product child of the 50's and most comfortable with brown sugar, cinnamon and butter who would have ever thought at this point in my career the computer would have become such a mainstay in the communication strategy of my company!

The post listed below of a blog for the Profit Hunter's Club is an example of how with a click of the mouse, Apple's Bakery has been presented to a new group of individuals outside of Central Illinois. Another example would be the interview done by George Younan of Melbourne Australia as a segment to be included in his expanding online business: www.secretsfromthetrenches.com . The bottom line of viral marketing examples such as these is that business in today's marketplace need not be limited to only the customer coming in the front door. This concept was supported in an intensive workshop presented at a recent Make Mine A Million program by the team of Count Me In for Women's Economic Independence in Albuquerque, New Mexico. To learn more of the information presented go to www.makemineamillion.org. This is an information rich website for all those in business today.

Apple's Bakery is serious about our role as a facilitator of the conversations of others with our "Smiles made from Scratch" and a social networking platform is a cutting edge way to build a customer base while in challenging economic times.

Profit Hunters Club - Are you still looking?: Defying the downturn

Profit Hunters Club - Are you still looking?: Defying the downturn

Apple's Bakery launches Gluten Free Whoesale Division

Apple's Bakery is pleased to announce the launch of our new wholesale Gluten Free Division. We at Apple's Bakery are soaring toward the Holiday season just around the corner! So, before that is upon us, please mark your calendars now for our 2nd Annual National Pie Day celebration to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis awareness. Many of you know my mom, Alberta, has faced being afflicted with MS for a number of years. Her approach to life has been unwavering even with the challenging MS bring each day. She even continues to be the bakery's best box folder! As that she was my key inspiration as pie instructor early in my life, celebrating pie is a simple happy task for all of us at Apple's Bakery. Last year our impromptu fundraiser brought in nearly $900. This year we feel we can double that and we need you help. So save the date January 23, 2009 and be a part of my pie eating family. Our mission is to facilitate the conversations of others with our Smiles made from scratch and what better way than sharing a pie with friends and family!

What a Birthday! Let's celebrate!

Today is a day for me to celebrate! It's my birthday and life is simply fantastic! It all really began 2 years ago, June 3, 2006. The location is beautiful San Fransisco, the NAWBO Annual conference and the Make Mine a Million Dollar Business program. While reflecting that expereince this morning, my heart was instantly filled with gratefulness toward those individuals who have inspired me over the years to reach for new opportunities for growth. Several of those folks got an email this morning saying "thank you". This blog gives me the opportunity to just say a gigantic thank you to all as you take time to check in.

My general manager, Becky and I were discussing over coffee this morning all the changes the past 2 years have brought the business. Personal and professional growth abounds. Our daily approach is fast and forward thinking. Each day is centered as an emerging company, no longer a small business stuck in the same ole' routine of the past.

Here are just a few tools now residing in our toolbox:

The Politeness Pledge

Our mission statement: "To be a company recognized as a facilitator of memorable conversation and a leader in smile generation within the lives of our staff, customers, and vendors.

Know our financial position at all times

Delegate

Don't let the distractions and drama interfere with accomplishing the goals of the company

Be the leader!

Work only with those who clearly understand and believe in the mission and goals of the company.

HAVE FUN!!!!!

It is awith a renewed spirit Apple's Bakery moves forward. It seems as if the Holiday season was just upon us and now it is mid May. The past year has been remarkable in getting our story out and building the foundation for our future. Apple's Bakery has made a dramatic shift in the presentation of our business culture. In roads have been made in our mindset away from that of a "small business", to that of an emerging company. This is still a process, but the staff is thinking and communicating large. Wow... is this powerful! As a professional foodservice company the first half of the year is entrenched in planning for the second half of the year. Our efforts have centered at creating new revenues in the launch of gluten free products which have been met with overwhelming success and now the development of a coporate gift program.

Being a business owner is certainly never dull and the rewards are limitless with all of the relationships fostered at each twist and turn. Two vital new exposures to the talents of Simon Sinek and Ellen Rohr have allowed my business to explode with the discovery of our "why" and the tools to keep us on target.

I celebrate as Apple's Bakery announces we are a company focused on promoting our customer's community and facilitating their conversations! Wishing you the finest of days!

Do you have the tools to put in place?

The Apple's Bakery Politeness Pledge.....
We will be...passionate and approach our work with
fun and enthusiasm.
We will demonstrate...respect for others.
We will do...what it takes to get the job done while
respecting legal and ethical boundaries.
We will recognize...colleagues when we win. I + V + B = R ( Imagine it + Vision it + Believe it = Reality) Who knows ,I may have come to all of this at some point in my career, but the opportunity to be part of the M3 community has certainly put me in the place where I need to be at this point of my life. You know ... it feels good and right. I encourage any of you that may read my ramblings to never give up on the willingness to learn and grow. If you are a woman with a business you wish to grow, I encourage you to visit the Make Mine a Million website and join our community. Have a great day and SMILE!

Moving Forward Has All Different Faces

Moving forward comes in all dimensions in life. Being a veteran baker and entrepreneur is only one enjoyable facet of my life. Being a mother is where my greatest joy lies. The picture in this post is of my son, Alex, is from last years' cross country team. It is reminiscent of great memories as a mother as he challenged himself over the course of 4 years of taking his body to a faster pace, developing the self discipline of training, and enjoying the camaraderie of being a part of a team. On a recent family vacation while hiking in the remote area of the Wind River Range in Wyoming, he and I had a conversation which continues to resonate in my mind after returning home. We were discussing the bridge between high school and going off to college. When asked what "wigged" him out most, he answered I am "comfortable". My response was then it is time for a change. The changes that occur when bridging from one plateau to the next level can often be scary and uncomfortable. Yet, this is how and where we define ourselves in life. Now, these words flowed from my mouth relatively easily when in the role of a parent, but resonate with an element of reluctance when directing them to myself.

The Make Mine A Million$ Program has been instrumental for me to develop a greater sense of who I am, what my vision and dream look like, and using change as a positive professional development tool. Recently, my business was eager to enter into a new style of business growth relationship. One that tested every fiber of my personal beliefs and the direction of my business. It was challenging to say the least. My heart and soul went into the venture, certain it would take me to the next level and beyond. Courage tested ... knowledge expanded ... self examined .... discovery revealed. With each of these steps on the path, I became more and more uncomfortalbe. A sense of loss permeated my mind. "Where could this be coming from?" I thought I was reaching for my dream. Then a wake up call came. It's ok to change dierection while still on the path to the dream.

A Year of Immersion

Wow, is about the only word which comes to mind. A year ago this time, I was preparing for the trip to San Francisco to compete for the Make Mine a Million. Looking back at the past year, no one could have adequately prepared me for the major shifts about to occur in my life ... professionally or personally. This past year, as a Make Mine a Million award recipient, was combined with the leadership role of our local Chamber of Commerce representing nearly 1300 businesses. It is incredible to me what opportunities and experiences came across my path. Exposure to such an energizing group of woman all across the country combined with business people in the community from small to Fortune 500 companies has kept me on my toes constantly learning. Quite frankly, I am exhausted and looking forward to the summer months for some relaxation.

The coaching encouraged by the M3 family has been valuable beyond belief throughout all of this. My coach has become a key member of my team and a friendship has developed. Through our conversations I have learned to focus on the word trust. Believing to trust in self, others, my vision and the universe is leading me to accomplish goals I have set for myself for the first time in my life. The coaching exercises have assisted me in personal growth and had a positive ripple effect to those around me.

I have to admit the bottom line results from this past year have not been what was anticipated. Yet, I feel more connected and believe in my business more than ever. In looking back, it has been a year of reorganization and investment. The business climate locally is changing. The staff and I must keep on constant vigil to maximize revenue opportunities differently than in the past. It requires a traditional food business to look for non traditional methodologies to not just maintain business levels, but be mindful for successful growth. Apple's has not achieved the 1M threshold this year. This is a disappointment to me on some levels. Yet, because of the M3 network I know, understand, and trust my business more than I did a year ago. With strategies which were implemented last 4th quarter, I am confident we are moving in the right direction to ultimately surpass the 1M mark.

So, stay tuned as we ramp up the momentum fueled from the year's past experiences!

It is time to Launch!

Earlier this week, I was diligently reviewing the Apple's bookwork. This is fairly easy for me to do on a regular basis, since I am the bookkeeper! While examining February 07 to February 06, I became puzzled as to an expense line item for $800 in travel. Not being able to shake the fuzziness in my head as to where I had gone last February, I began to dig for definition. I was struck by the realization this $800 expense represented the beginning of my commitment to launch Apple's Bakery to greater expectations. The trip was to Mobile Alabama to meet a consultant who, with his partner, were going to develop a relationship with my company and QVC. The experience was one of exhilaration and the hope of what if this dream could really come true! I boarded a plane loaded with delicious samples of cookies, ready to WOW their taste buds. There would be no up front fee. Fees would be based on a successful relationship. There was no written strategy or business plan. My trust was placed in the efforts of others charged to promote my business successfully for a giant corporation to jump at the opportunity of having a small Midwestern bakery appear in their product list. The ensuing months led to the Make Mine a Million Dollar Business competition. Each month had yet another great idea channelled into it. Dollars were spent to upgrade the facility, web design took on heightened relevancy, promotional literature was designed to capture sophisticated look, staff was groomed for a new day, and time was racing by in anticipation of new revenues the future would bring.

As owner, I had decided it was time to LAUNCH to loftier goals. To be honest, I would not change any of the past year, but will admit it hasn't performed to my expectations. January and February have been spent in close reflection on my initial launch. Yes, much has been learned. A close friend once told me this would be a year to be "naked" with myself. What a humbling time! I've come to the conclusion we never really know ourselves, and that it is all a journey of process. You know, I love my business and yet have learned some aspects of myself I really don't care for. In our businesses, when we have staff or a business element we don't care for we change it. Those scenarios are easier than dealing with ourselves. The M3 program has given me the confidence and courage to work honestly on these personal elements. AS a business owner of 23 years, my heart is telling me I am just beginning to work strategically to goals never believed possible. These goals have a uniqueness .... they are mine for the first time in my entire life!

Now when I say it is time to LAUNCH, I embrace where I am launching from with determination as to where I am launching! To be at this place and point in my life is grounding and stabilizing. It transcends my work life and enriches my personal life. I raise my hands and shout with joy that the best is yet to be!

Apple's Bakery is soon to be a household name across the country! We want in your mouth with a "smile made from scratch"!

The Strike of Adversity

The Strike of Adversity

In previous articles, I have shared thoughts on the importance of respectful communication, a well developed business plan and the premise opportunities are the result of preparedness. Yet, where in all this sound business practice, do we as business owners, account for the sudden appearance of adversity and its’ effects on our best laid plans? Where in the business plan is the cushion for the unexpected snow storm, the key employee that decides to leave just at the most inopportune moment, a building permit posted in the paper signals more competition planned for your neighborhood, or pending legislation imposing additional regulation and costs?

Remarkably the afore mentioned are simply part of being a business owner. Each of our businesses experiences the highs and lows of industry specific business cycles. Embedded along the way will be strikes of adversity. It is the manner in which we and our staff handle the effects of adversity in order for our business to prevail. Personal experience with adversity has provided me many lessons. The first lesson is a reality check with humility. This up close and personal reflection as a leader is where circumstances are saying maybe the current plan needs to be refined or possibly retooled. It shows us we are not infallible and even the best plan does not cover everything. Secondly, it has been my experience, when adversity strikes, others within the organization will dig deep and shine with a talent previously hidden just beneath the surface. Remarkably adversity to one becomes an opportunity for another. Acknowledging this growth within a staff member is a mechanism to fuel the spirit of the entire team. Lastly, it is the commitment to success that prevails at the beginning and end of each business day. This commitment is steeped in sound principles of integrity, customer satisfaction, and a cohesive team spirit to bring a business out of adversity and on to the track of long term success.

The past several months, as the Chairwoman of the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce, have shown me a depth of community spirit which has arisen out of adversity that shows me just what a special community the Peoria region is. With the inevitable rise of electric rates, the Chamber identified this as an opportunity to develop a co-op model banding businesses of all size together as an effort to reduce costs. Another example is when the District 150 Truancy Center, a proven successful program was threatened, valuable members of the business community, Chamber and District 150 Foundation came together to ask the public to pitch in. Once again the spirit of cooperation shone through and led the way! The list is long of examples of our community working together when there may be a bump in the road.

No matter whether the occurrence of adversity is in our personal businesses or our community, the essence of strong team unity and spirit will prevail for each to succeed. We each are personally blessed with great staff leading our businesses and great leaders guiding our community. I, personally, am thankful for both.

Are You Working Alone or Together?

My experience as a business owner has been fulfilling, yet at times, it can be quite lonely. As a woman in the business of making people happy with"smiles made from scratch", how could I ever be lonely? Yet, this can be true even when surrounded by great customers, a hard working staff and the delicious aromas permeating the workplace. If you are a business owner, you may be able to relate to these comments. In small business, all of the decisions rest with you. Some of us have trusted staff to assist in the decision making process, while others have a staff of just one. Either way at the end of the day, these decisions-those which will determine the health of our business- are ours. There are periods when this responsibility can make you feel like you are all alone.

Earlier this year after being inducted in the Make Mine a $Million Program, I was struck by the sheer enormity of the power of working together. The Make Mine a $Million experience came on the heels of my having become the current chairperson of the Peoria Area Chamber of Commerce. These two opportunities have presented me with a unique view of group leadership as each organization works to show interested group the value of working together. Make Mine a $Million has brought together a slew of corporate partners to present participants with greater resources aimed at steering individual businesses to greater success. Our area Chambers of Commerce bring community partners together through regular leadership meetings with the elected officials community. These conversations represent thoughtfulness on the part of the business community to regularly communicate business' positions on key issues.

All interested groups gain when we work together and advocate the success of one another. These two opportunities exemplify we are NEVER alone if we are working together! I encourage anyone reading the blogs and are a business owner to "declare" to grow your business by going to the Make Mine a $Million website. I encourage each of us to be active community participants and lend our voices to make the business climate at home the strongest it can be.

Time to leave you for now, and continue planning and preparing for the Thanksgiving rush.
Happy Thanksgiving and I am thankful for each day and each of you.

Plan .. It's like this every year. You just get done and begin the cycle all over again. Much brainstorming on what went right and what didn't. How did the margins come out ... Did we exceed our customers expectations ... How can we improve. There is this constant stream of questions. The formula is Plan ... Prepare ... Preview ...Perform.

This year began much the same way at first and then we decided to GROW! Not only did we commit to grow big, but committed to grow really big. That has led us to this wonderful opportunity currently being lived with the family of Count Me In and the Make Mine a Million $ Business program. WOW ... Oh My ... Here WE Go!!!!

The planning stage, though never complete, moved on to the prepare stage. The month of September has been fraught with preparations. Inventories have been subject to efficiency reviews. Better pricing on packaging, flour and especially chocolate chips have been negotiated. Financing and building permits were issued to upgrade our facility for both our current customer and to enhance workspace efficiency. These decisions were the result of much reflection on the part of all staff. The conversation centered around the word value. We all readily agreed our bathrooms were dated and the business would gain from a "perceived investment value" from our customers. I know past customer surveys indicated the importance of bathroom facilities to our customer., and ours were in the need of a fresh coat of paint. This decision led us to examine how our growth strategy was going to impact our production space. Our building has a great deal of dedicated public space. We weren't certain where our space review would lead us. We discussed and evaluated how long are the ovens on, how well is the storage space being utilized, and do we have enough refrigeration to handle an increased work load. The game began with a different tone. This time the tone is centered on the what happens if this size order is placed or what happens if our product gets picked up by a national vendor. All of a sudden, reality set in for us all about growing and a cold sweat trickled on now what do we do!

With the planning and preparing in September, the building is getting a makeover with new bathrooms, old furnaces will be removed to make way for a bigger dishwashing area, a new 12 by 18 walk in freezer will caused a hole to be put in the outside back wall, the old freezer will become increase our refrigeration by 50%. These are just the physical changes. The most meaningful changes continue to be those I witness with my staff and loyal customer base as their support and efforts guide us on to the future.

October bodes to be a month of disruption. I am confident in my staff by Halloween their customer service and production performance will be a superb preview to what the remainder of the 4th quarter will be like for Apple's Bakery.

We seem to say it all the time around here .... Thank you to Count Me In as a valued partner in our plan, preparation, preview and performance.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://maryardapple.blogspot.com/2006/10/plan-prepare-preview-perform.html' title='Plan .. Expectations Expressed .....Exhilaration and Anticipation ..... Financial Commitments Signed .... Encouragement from other abounds.........

All of the above just scratch the surface of what the Make Mine a Million Business program presents an award recipient. Then reality sets in. Immediate results rarely match the pace of all the other emotions which surround business development. The staff and I have been empowered with a newly minted sense of direction. In particular, July and August were months entrenched with vast decision making resulting in financial commitments that out matched any short term revenue growth. This can make a person nervous to say the least! Staff responsibilities have been aligned to match the growth strategies. Just when you think traction is gaining, the rug gets pulled on yet another what was thought to be a great idea. Questions abound: What direction do I turn, who do I talk to first, I hired a new person now how do I pay for them, when is the tide going to turn my way?????

This is when the self discipline of patience and trust must be embraced. The mastery of these skills is what I have relied on countless times in my career. I recently mentioned to my husband I was edgy and anxious. He said, " you are like that every August because you are getting ready for the high season." You know there is truth in what he said (as much as I hate to admit it!). It seems like I hold my breath every summer. Our business is reflective of the weather for business patterns. Think about it . If it is 90 degrees and 90% humidity, you don't eat as much as if it is 70 degrees cool and a light drizzle. All I can say is come on October!!!!

The time is fast approaching when elements of our growth strategies are about to be tested. Last month I shared about the introduction of "Core Care" packages to the college market. A new Television commercial has begun to air promoting our website. Yeah! Orders have been received as a direct contribution of these steps. Yet, impatience whispers in my ear ... "Sure there are orders, but not enough".

I have confidence and say thank you, to the self discipline of patience and trust, the best is yet to come!

You just never know when opportunity will knock!

Earlier this month you all were with me as I made a successful proposal to Bradley University. Thank you for being there in spirit and I would like to share the moment with you. Since returning from San Francisco, Apple's has identified 3 growth strategies. Strategy #2 is the development of a direct mail campaign to industries / businesses within a 100 mile radius of our zip code and we will be reaching approximately 16,000 addresses. Well, as that piece was beginning to take shape, I had a chance encounter with the president of Bradley University after a community meeting where I was commenting on us becoming shippers of baked goods. He was interested in our information, so the next day we sent him a can of cookies and a new idea for parents to ship care packages to their college student. The very afternoon he got the can, I received a call from a an assistant provost to set up a meeting about our packages. After I did a brief introduction but before I got to the program, I had brought each of them a tin of cookies; (1/2 chocolate chip and 1/2 white chocolate cranberry) ... I asked them to take the lid off their can and smell. Ladies, you should have seen their faces melt and smile... YES, they could smell the smell!!!! I thought of all my fellow Make Mine a $Million friends at that very moment. The outcome of the meeting is that we will be creating a category on our web catalog for Core Care packages, and starting it off to 2100 families on August 19th for move in day at the University. This is a program the University has thought about in the past, but does not provide. WE see this as a big opportunity that existed right inside our existing market. My goal is to develop the program with BU for the next 2 school cycles and hire a sales person to work the college market to develop new business. For Bradley, they get $1 of each sale which will be donated back to their Residence Hall programming.

I really came away with 3 items here:
1. Get involved not only in your business, but your Community.
2. The support of M3 and Count Me In is extraordinary and something I value greatly.
3. You never know where an opportunity will spring up, so remember to promote your ideas all the time.

July and the dog days of summer.

July is a challenging month for my business. First, the weather makes baking a challenge. Our kitchen is not temperature controlled. With average temperatures frequently in the mid 90's and 100% humidity, the bakers have to be sensitive to any recipes that may need adjusting because of the extra moist air. This is a learned skill and a must so the customer continues to enjoy the highest quality product we can deliver. It's a must to have the edge of the cookie deliver a rich, buttery edge that delights the taste buds. Secondly, with school out, pools and golf courses brimming in attendance, and vacations being enjoyed our customer base falls off noticebly. Thirdly, our eating patterns just flat out change during the summer. So, July is always a month with more money going out than coming in. One would think I would get accustomed to this, but even after twenty years in the food business the month still fills me with anxiety and nervousness.

In the past the business strategy has been to cut expenses as deep as possible. One area taking the hardest hit would have been kitchen payroll. I would have stepped in to fill shifts on a daily basis and saving hourly payroll. Hopefully this would be accomplished without losing key staff. I must admit that has not always been the case. It was a short sighted approach which often left me directly tied to production and leaving little time to develop concepts. This has contributed significantly to me be a member of the "missing middle" the Make Mine a $Million Dollar program is addressing.

Proudly, I confess to a different approach which has been embraced largely as a result of the Make Mine a Million initiative. During the latter part of June and the complete month of July the focus has been on identifying and developing three primary growth strategies to launch Apple's Bakery over the million dollar sales threshold.

WOW is about all I can say!!!!! This renewed approach of emphasizing working on my business, not in it has had a liberating aura to not only myself, but enitre staff. (The only downside for me personnally has been sitting in front of a computer much more than ever before instead of at a cookie baking table and oven.Yet, it has not slowed my consumption of cookies. The gym is your friend!) Each day has been filled with learning how much more I don't know, make growth related decisions, and working with a group of indiviuals that have formed as a team filled with belief in our ability to do anything we set our minds to. It was so cool to have a staff member yesterday finish her shift and return to the office and say, "have I told you lately how much I like working here>" Yes, it did about make my eyes mist over and well up. It's events like this that I daily say a moment of thanks to the power above and to each of those I have met with the Make Mine a $Million business program. ( and am looking forward to meeting in the future.)

You know, I may or may not have accomplished breaking the $1M threshold at some point in the future, but it is a great deal more fun and meaningful to be working toward the goal with a community of outstanding ladies.

July 2006

Hello to all from Apple's Bakery in Peoria, Illinois; a business focused on taking care of people through the creation of "Smiles made from Scratch".

As this is my first ever blogging experience, I am not entirely certain where I want to begin. So much has occurred to me personnally and professionally since the start of 2006. It is an exceptional honor to have been chosen as a Make Mine a $Million award recipient.

Let's go to the beginning of the year to recap how I got into the program share a bit on what it now means to be part of this unique opportunity. Apple's Bakery is a "scratch" bakery. Our style of independent operator is a dwindling breed. Located in the heart of the Midwest, the Apple's experience has grown as a tradtional small business with owner and staff alike coming in the back door to do a day's work with little thought as to will the next day be overtly different. I have been comfortable with the rhythym of the environment with the head down to pound out the daily tasks. Up to now I have been satisfied with operating on the gut feel and tempo of my passion with little to no profound puroseful drive. Sure, there have been periods of development that have created renewed energy, profitibility, and motivation. There have, also, been periods of frustration, hopelessness, and fits of tears. During the course of the past two years, I have introduced other business concepts to Apple's as an effort to try and figure out who do I want to be when I grow up. (Now, I must admit, that I do not plan on completely ever growing up!)

My community involvement has educated me how much the wall-less office is not a dream of tomorrow, but a reality of today. This was learned while sitting through countless meetings listening to how our community is working at attracting the professional that wants to live in an affordable community with an excellent qualtiy of life, but have the office be in a city hundreds of miles away. I got to thinking why not expand my customer base and reach out with "scratch" baking packaged with Midwestern hospitality and ship our products around the country.
With these thoughts in mind, my awareness to trade and association publications were heightened. I began reading intentionally looking for a nugget that may lead me to a next step. A step away from my norm and into unchartered waters. This is how I stumbled across a teleconference in mid April promoting Make Mine a $Million business program. This invitation encouraged me to be BOLD, and I took the challenge.

This challenge was entered with a singular point of view. I questioned myself as to whether this effort was a possible key to assist in the further development of my business. WOW has this experience opened my eyes. I went to San Francisco as an individual representing an individual business. How was I to know my life would be changed forever in the process! I returned home proudly a member of a social / economic grassroots efforts that potentially will change the face of economic development for the country!

In closing today's entry; I am humbled and honored to join the Count Me In / Make Mine a $Million business program and look most forward to developing longstanding relationships.
Have a great day!
