Does Your Balance Include Fun?
There is always so much chatter in the news about remembering to maintain a work - life balance. The importance of balance should never be minimalized. It is an equation where the decisions we make can be the difference between success and failure not only for ourselves but our businesses. Yet, prioritizing and accomplishing effective balance can easily be shoved to a backburner as a business owner is struggling during this economic downturn.
Recently, I had been feeling a slow slide toward all work and no play. Ever sense becoming involved in the Make Mine a Million program, it seems my mind has been stretched in every direction. I have enjoyed the mental challenges of becoming strategic in business development. The conversations my coach and I have shared have opened layers of my inner self to me with positive outcomes never befored explored. The net benefit even rippled over into becoming a runner last year for the first time. The reward not only physical but mentally expansive. The year sped past with all types of developments and the running just plodded along becoming a comfortable friend.
With the scope of our gluten free wholesale becoming a reality, I have been fixated 24/7 on the launch and production of our first orders. Excercise has remained a part of my balance regimen, but with a lesser degree of intensity as a stress reducer. Little did I realize how consumed I had become until a casual email from a friend came asking my participation in an upcoming fundaraiser. The organization CASA of Peoria County, http://www.casapeoria.org/, was having their annual fundraiser as a spin off of the Television hit “Dancing with the Stars”. Without much forethought, because I was really thinking about what I had to do next with the business, I said “OK.” Then the reality set in….remembering that I don’t dance! My friend assures, “me that’s ok … you’ll be partnered with someone who does and will teach you.” In answer to the questioning look from family and friends that I had agreed to this was …. if I can’t laugh and have fun with myself then things have gotten too serious.
The past 4 weeks now simultaneously included absolutely the biggest business initiative in my career along with dance class. The experience has reinforced the value of fun and laughter! The event is now past, but lessons learned of letting someone lead, posture, preparedness, and trust will carry me forward in many positive ways. In a subsequent post I plan to expand how this experience will be utilized as a reinforcement to my life -work balance methodology.
What about you? Are you remembering the fun factor for your life?
